Interview between Keira Kroft and Darcy Town

Welcome to Keira’s Corner, where there is always chocolate, and lots and lots of coffee.

First a little bit about Darcy Town

I earned a degree in Comparative Religion, so themes-wise that certainly pops up here and there in my writing (okay, more than a little here and there in some books).

I write what I enjoy reading/watching - which is fantasy/sci-fi with dark humor and a bit of romance. What I consider romance however is to some...a bit off (and kinked out). And when I say dark humor I mean black. But I always have lighthearted moments (I do not believe a story should be all one way or another). Gotta spice things up!

Speaking of...I like to write stories that cater to all sexual preferences in one story (as opposed to just writing gay/lesbian lit, etc). I have your typical male-female romances. I have male-male, female-female, transgender, bi-sexual, sub-dom, etc. This is mostly due to the fact that well...1. I like writing about it. 2. I see it in my everyday life. 3. I like having a well-rounded cast of characters from all walks of life.

I am the author of the Morningstar Trilogy and the Wastes Series.

Welcome Darcy I have a few questions for you.
Keira: You have a story, Wastes of Space, that is available now. What is that about?
Short answer:  Wastes of Space is a story about a washed out American astronaut, Rake, who gets a second chance at space and life when he is thrown together with an alien, Ravil, who is on the run from a space-faring empire.

Keira: Where in the Hell did you find time to write?

I work from home, so at the moment it is easy to find time before work, at lunch, and after work.  I write sporadically.  I used to have hours of time that I would dedicate to writing each day, but since I’ve injured my wrists, it’s better for me to write in short 15-30 minute blocks throughout the day.  Finding time like that is pretty easy.

Keira: Why are you a writer?

I love the creation process, and I enjoy telling stories.  Writing gives me a sense of accomplishment that I do not get anywhere else.  I also fall in love with my characters, so writing about them is fun and an emotional rollercoaster.

Keira: How many hours a day do you dedicate to writing?

Currently anywhere from half an hour to three or four hours.  Lately, it’s been closer to the half hour mark, but that’s life getting in my way, not a lack of desire to write.

Keira: Do you use a particular writing method?

I don’t do anything special to start off.  I sit down at my computer and try to dive right in, and then I keep writing until a scene is complete (I dislike writing half a scene and then stopping for a break).  I always have a general idea of where a scene is going to go and what it should accomplish, but I never really know until I start writing it.  I keep my ideas loose, and if the story takes a strange turn, I always let it go that way.  But, I do have an overall road map for a book, and for the series as a whole.

Keira: What time of day, do you write best?

Early morning or the evening.  I tend to get sleepy midday and all I want to do then is take a nap.  I am a morning person, so I can get up and write with no problems (as long as I have some coffee), but in the evening I really feel amped to write.  If I start in the evening around dinnertime, I can write late into the night.

Keira: What advice would you give to an unpublished writer?

Don’t think about publishing, hard I know, focus on the story and complete that.  I think many writers focus on the publishing aspect, when they need to focus on the story and making that the best that it can be.  The story is the most important, not who distributes your books.  Once it’s totally complete, proofed, edited, proofed ten more times…then start thinking about what route you want to go for publishing.

Let’s get personal…
Keira: What is your favorite food?
Noodles of any kind.  I am a pasta junkie.

Keira: What is your favorite color?
Green.  I love the color green. Me too :)

Keira: Do you have pets?
I have a lovely fluffy black cat named Hesper.  She is my writing companion, and she typically sits in my lap when I am at the computer.

Keira: What do you consider a household staple?
Coffee…coffee is a necessity.  I get cranky if I go somewhere and realize I cannot get a cup of coffee anytime I want.

Keira: What are you reading?
The Golden Globe by John Varley.

Keira: Can you share a synopisis with us? Of course.

Haven't got enough of Darcy and Wastes of Space? Here's more....

Synopsis for Wastes Away – Book Two:

…A split second later in the same galaxy as before, but pretty far away…

Rake and Ravil have escaped Earth and the Empire, towing the rest of their friends and new allies with them. They flee to an abandoned Empire colony known only as Seed Planet 15.

Out of fuel and common sense, they crash and nearly wreck their ship, stranding them in the middle of a seemingly endless swamp. On first glance the place looks mostly harmless, but what they've landed on is anything but. Seed Planet 15 has a nasty history.

The planet has more hidden in the mist than just ghosts and rumors. And if the crew doesn’t get off the planet soon, there will be nothing left of them but spare parts and a rusted ship.

Synopsis for Waste Not, Want Not – Book Three:

Barely making it off Seed Planet Fifteen with their lives, Rake and the crew are content to hang out and lick their wounds for a while, if it weren't for the fried wiring and Stalker damage that have left the ship prone to reoccurring blackouts.

Needing supplies for repairs, the crew decides the best course of action is to raid abandoned Ampyr outposts for gear. Smart, no foreseeable problems there. Except one of the outposts they hit isn't empty, Lincoln's personality issues are getting worse, food is going missing, and their Rexos is about to hit puberty and apparently that's accompanied by uncontrollable rages. As if that wasn't enough bad news, there seems to be a sentient black hole chasing down Ravil and attempting to eat her.

But not to worry, Danny's reforming their squad and apparently ranking still flies out in space. No more messing around, things are getting serious. At least seriously screwed up.

Stop by the rest of the tour :)

Introducing Emergence by C. Michelle Jefferies

Keira’s Corner would like to introduce C. Michelle Jefferies. This is the first of two stops that this awesome writer will be making here. Look for her December 12th. I will be conducting an interview and we will chatting about her Christmas themed story.

    A little about Ms. Jefferies

    C. Michelle Jefferies practically grew up in a library. The oldest daughter of four, she spent hours devouring books with her mother. When she was ten, she realized that she wanted to write stories like the science fiction books she loved to read. In high school, she met another writer that inspired her to write a novel instead of just short stories. She finished that 189 page handwritten novel the summer of her junior year.

A mother of seven, she put her writing on the back burner while she focused on raising her young children, and volunteering as a breastfeeding counselor in her community. When her children were old enough for her to spend a few hours on the computer, without them burning the house down, she returned to writing and hasn’t stopped since. Often writing or editing with a baby in her arms or under her feet.

Married to the guy her high school boyfriend introduced her to; she claims the last 20 + years as her education and mission experience. With a love for natural mothering, and a passion for secret agents and all things Asian she writes about bad boys turned good and fantasy of the urban type. All while beating herself up three times a week in Karate class as she works toward her black belt in Tang Soo Do.
    A little bit about Emergence

    A Hitman with a Conscience.

Assassin Antony Danic has never killed an innocent man. At least the corporation he works for has never given him a reason to think otherwise until now. Reeling from a series of demanding assignments, Antony is desperate for some downtime. As he sits on a beach in Tahiti watching his wife play in the ocean, a messenger from his employer delivers a death threat. Suddenly, the hunter has become the hunted. While Antony struggles to find a way out of his till death do us part contract, he's faced with the decision of a lifetime: kill another man who may be innocent, or do what's right even if it puts his family in jeopardy.

Terrifying Tuesday: Interview with Horror Writer J. Gunn

Welcome to Keira’s Corner, where there is always chocolate, and lots and lots of coffee.

Keira: You have a story out, a self-published project entitled Devil's in the Details. What is that about?

Jen: This is a compilation of two years of short horror tales derived to give the horror lovers out there something to enjoy this fall into winter. If you like blood and gore you're going to love it.

Keira: What do you wear, to write?

Jen: I would say nothing but you all know that's not true, usually my jammies.

Keira: Is writing your only talent?

Jen: No just my favorite one, I also have learned a lot of formats for books, I love to draw, I used to sing in the choir, anything artist usually strikes a chord with me and I try to learn it. I'm a fast learner.

Keira: Why are you a writer?

Jen: Because when I think about not writing, I can't breathe. After almost 20 years it's like water in a river, without it I think I would just about dry up and fade away.

Keira: What time of day, do you write best?

Jen: The nighttime is my favorite time to write, it's quiet. The vampire tunes inspire and it flows better when the sun isn't shining in my eyes.

Keira: Do you use one or more pen names?

Jen: Yes, currently I guess I have two, picked up another a few months back for another project I'm working on with a friend. They are J. Gunn and Aziraphale the Angel of Death.

Keira: Are you currently running any contests? What are they?

Jen: No, I'm currently not but give it time I may think up a few.

Keira: What advice would you give to an unpublished writer?

Jen: Keep going, do not give up or give in no matter how depressing it feels at times. You WILL eventually find a method that works for you if you want it bad enough. Never stop learning and growing.

    Let’s get personal…

Keira: What is your guilty Pleasure?

Jen: Right now, it would be Kindle books. Usually it's other things like chocolate I can't have because it hurts my teeth.

Keira: What is your favorite Smell?

    Jen: Vanilla scented anything.

Keira: Can you tell us a secret?

Jen: Well, yeah I guess I can tell you, I'm planning a few more projects. I'm working on a Children's book for my daughter to be out around Christmas and a novel about a family who lives with and deals with daily a lot of ghost issues, it's not due out really soon just might be done with the first draft pretty soon, I'm at about 33k with it right now. (Huge secret about the ghost story, I didn't start writing it until September 17th!)

    Keira: What are you reading?

Jen: At the moment, not a thing lol! I've read a lot of books by my fellow authors, which I try to review because I love my friends, but lately I've been working so much I'm behind severely so I hope they don't smack me with a book from across the country lol!

Keira: Can you share your blurb with us?

What’s more tantalizing or titillating on Halloween then bloody corpses, living nightmares, or hatchets used to cut you to pieces? Inside this anthology you will find more than one's fair share of gore, and atrophy. Don’t blame me for what enters your dreams.

    Devil's in the Details excerpt:

Excerpt from Your Blood, Devil's in the Details, Horror Anthology by J. Gunn

The day has come to kill you. Everything about you must die because your very presence on earth is wrong. You have been here without a soul for far too long. This world deserves a chance to live on without you, you evil son of a bitch. I will hunt you and when I find you and yours, you all will die.

I finally found you one day at a place secluded from a lot of other people in the dark; I had searched for what felt like ages. But really it had only been days. I walked out there without shoes and my feet were muddy and bleeding. My white dress draped my small form, clinging to me with sweat from walking all the way into the remote locale that your warehouse fortress had to be.

I walked all the way out there with my hatchet in my hand and murder on my mind. It glistened shining in the moonlight. And I saw a light on in the top floor window of your evil factory.

Grass that crackled on the bottom of my feet crunched as I slowly make my way up to the entrance of your ‘palace.’ I see you sitting with your back to the window and the small pains of glass glow with the light from your lamps.

I decided the place would go up in flames easy enough because the building was very old and I would do that after I killed you. It would be harder to tell who killed you if the evidence was all charred or mostly gone. Fire was like water a renewal source, so when it all burned to the ground it would cleanse the earth of your evil as well.

My small hand griped the hatchet hard and my brown eyes burn with tears of hatred for you and what you’ve done. My tear stained face was filled with emotions of many women all at once living in my head. My light olive skin was dirty and parts of my body are bleeding. My white dress is dirty too; matted with filth of the days and hours it took me to get to you.

I hide now staring up at you from behind a tree closest to the window you sit by. You have no idea I’m here, and certainly no idea that anyone knows about you and what you are, too bad for you but someone found you out and now I’m here to kill you. I see also that you have another with you I think I will go after him first then you. You will be the most fun anyway and why not save the best for last.

Magic Monday Interview with Chantilly White

Welcome to Keira’s Corner, where there is always chocolate, and lots and lots of coffee. Thanks so much for having me, Keira!

Keira: You have a story that just came out, entitled Pearls of Pleasure. What is that about?
Pearls of Pleasure is the story of a married couple, Gwen and David, working through a very traumatic event in their past. I'm always interested in the ways married couples sustain their relationships and keep their love for each other as tight a bond as when they first fell in love, especially through difficult times. This is an exploration of what happens after the initial "happily ever after," when everything that was perfect gets turned upside down by life, and how they cope with those circumstances.

Keira: What do you wear, to write?

Ahh, well. . . Usually pajamas, if I'm honest. Whatever is most comfortable. I have threatened to start wearing one of my tiaras—I collect them—to signal to family that I'm working and not to be disturbed, but they're not that comfy for long-term wear.

Keira: Is writing your only talent?

I paint a little—a very little—and play the flute and piccolo. I used to dance—ballet, tap, jazz—and was a cheerleader in high school, so I started a cheerleading business when I lived in Wisconsin. I taught cheers and dance to kids from about three years old to junior high age and we performed at community events and high school halftimes. I still miss that business and the kids I got to work with. They were awesome!

Keira: Where in the Hell did you find time to write?

Finding time to write is a daily struggle for me, because I am excellent at wasting time, and I'm lazy. I love to cuddle up on the couch with a great book and not move for hours. With three kids, a husband who travels a lot, and three cats who need constant supervision (they are SO destructive!), it's been even tougher. But I finally had to have a heart-to-heart with myself and delineate what I really want to accomplish. I had to ask myself the serious questions. Did I want to be an author? A published author? Or just play around at writing for the rest of my life. The answer was "published author" so I had to then get serious about my time. I still waste plenty of it, but now that comes after the writing!

Keira: Why are you a writer?

I'm a writer, honestly, because I just can't help it. I've always written, since I could first hold a pencil. I wrote my first two-hundred page novel when I was eight. It's what I love. There's nothing better than tearing my hair out over the just the right phrase, creating the perfect mood in a story. It's hard sometimes, but I wouldn't want to do anything else. Besides, if I didn't write the stories the characters in my head demand, they'd torment me unmercifully. I'd probably wind up in a padded cell, sucking my thumb and talking to myself.

Keira: If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

That's a tough question because I have an excellent mentor already, and several other people who have helped me tremendously over the years. If I could keep them and add someone else to the mix, it would have to be Nora Roberts or JK Rowling. Their work ethic and business savvy is incredible.

Keira: How many hours a day do you dedicate to writing?

I don't set a specific amount of time, other than wishing I could write every day. With my family life, that's not realistic, so I write as often as I can. I've also been using writing sprints for the past year—half an hour of hardcore writing, no stopping, no researching, no staring into space, just fingers moving on keys until the timer goes off. That has really helped me, because if I allow my internal editor to sit on my shoulder, nitpicking everything I do, I wind up editing the same paragraph for hours and making no progress on the book as a whole. By setting a timer, the internal editor gets stuffed in a trunk. There's no time to listen to her carping! I've been able to write up to 1500 words in thirty minutes, and doing that a couple of times a day really boosts the overall word count.

Keira: Do you use a particular writing method?

No!! LOL I tried. I really did. I took all sorts of classes beyond my degree in writing, which didn't deal with the nitty gritty of writing a novel at all. I read every book on plotting, went through all the methods. I made up gorgeous storyboards, very detailed, very thorough. Then ignored them completely when I actually wrote the stories. I'm not a plotter. I wish I was, because it seems like such a clean, linear process, and mine is such a mess. I start in the middle, write scenes out of order, write the end before the beginning, you name it. It does require a lot more revision in the end than a novel that was carefully plotted from the beginning, but I've made peace with it. It's just the way I write. It works for me. Trying to be overly structured took all the fun out of writing, and if a writer isn't having fun, what's the point?

Keira: What advice would you give to an unpublished writer?

Get all the information about the business you can find, decide what you want and go for it.

Publishing has changed so much in the past few years, the landscape is unrecognizable. My original dream was always very specific. New York contract or bust! There's part of me that still wants that, but contracts are tricky right now. Plus, I'm a control freak. Going through New York, you get a lot of great benefits and the chance to work with some really amazing people. But you give up some things to do that, too, including creative control over a great deal of your work. And the waiting. . .

It's a tradeoff. I'm still interested in pursuing New York with the right project for the right publishing house. For now, I'm happy indie publishing my work, but that was not a decision I took lightly. It's important to be honest with yourself about what you want and why. If contest wins and industry awards are important to you, indie publishing is not the way to go. It's a lot of work on the business side—I make my own covers, format my work for publication, find beta readers and editors, upload it to all the retailers, do all the promotion, and had to learn to do each of those things, which did not come naturally to me. Luckily I have a lot of patient friends and colleagues who are always willing to help. It's time consuming, but also satisfying.

    Let’s get personal…

Keira: What is your favorite food?

    Pizza! And chocolate.

Keira: What is your guilty Pleasure?

My jet tub, full of hot water and yummy bubble bath.

Keira: What is your favorite Smell?

Chocolate chip cookies fresh from the oven.

Keira: What is your favorite color?

Red. And pink. I can never decide.

Keira: What is your favorite favorite animal?

    A great big fluffy cat.

Keira: Can you tell us a secret?

    Yes. But no. J

    Keira: Do you have pets?

Three insane (and great big fluffy) cats.

Keira: What do you consider a household staple?

    Diet Pepsi.

    Keira: What are you reading?

A Lady Awakened by Cecilia Grant, and it is fabulous.

Keira: Can you share your blurb with us?

    Absolutely!

His marriage turning to ash around him, David struggles to help his wife. Gwen's pain tears him apart. But despite her attempts to shut him out, he won't give up on her, or their relationship. Desperate, he convinces her to see a therapist.

    Terrifying Tuesday: Brett Williams

Interview between Keira Kroft and Brett Williams
Keira: You have a story coming out soon though Gallows Press entitled From Murky Depths. What is that about?
From Murky Depths about a troubled man looking to be a Good Samaritan after massive flooding hits Southeast Missouri. David Miller trolls his boat to help people in a tiny neighboring town. There he finds houses and businesses constructed on stilts, the town unscathed, pasty-skinned denizens unfriendly. However, David befriends a local couple on the outskirts of the town, and unwittingly becomes part of an epic struggle between good and evil—a struggle that will leave him questioning his faith…if he survives.

Keira: Is writing your only talent?

Heck no. I’m a pretty good cook, too. I’m pretty mean with a George Foreman Grill.

Keira: Where in the Hell did you find time to write?

Sometimes it’s tough. You’ve got to make time. And when you can’t make time, don’t beat yourself up too bad, if it’s not that often. In fact, I’m looking forward to my upcoming schedule change at my day job. I’ll be returning to a four day, ten hour shift again. That should help.

Keira: Why are you a writer?

The more I read, the more I want to write. For me, the two go hand-in-hand. I guess I just want to put a little Brett flare on the types of stories I like reading, as well as writing the more of the kind that are hard to come by. Plus I get stories stuck in my head. Writing is the only way to get them out.

Keira: If you could choose anyone, who would you pick as your mentor?

Richard Laymon, without a doubt. That man could spin a tale. He plays with his readers, screws with them. Reading a Richard Laymon tale you know that guy was having a blast. I have fun writing my stories, and I want my readers to have just as much fun. So I suppose he has taught me a thing or two. =)

Keira: How many hours a day do you dedicate to writing?

It varies widely. The minimum I can write is an hour—and that’s pretty tough. I typically start by rereading (editing) what I wrote the day before. I believe that helps with pacing.

Keira: Do you use a particular writing method?

You want me to tell all my tricks, don’t you? Ha ha… Just kidding. Not sure if it is a bad habit or not, but I do tend to count words. I think that helps me with pacing, too. I’m dead-set against writing a character sheet. I keep reading that writers, especially new writers, should write a character sheet. Bullshit. You got a character sheet written up, the first thing you’re going to be tempted to do is info dump. Yep, you’ll take a big ole crap right in the middle of your story. You don’t need to know much more than the basics about your character until the time comes. Your character stumbles across an M16, then you decide if your character retired from the military or lost a relative in the war. Maybe her older brother taught her to shoot while on leave. Who knows? A good writer shouldn’t, in my opinion, until the time comes. Characters develop much more organically that way.

Keira: What time of day, do you write best?

When inspiration hits! Although morning is better. I believe writer’s block is just a form of stress. If you run errands, meet with your kid’s teacher, etc. before you write, you are much more likely to get things on your mind besides what you are trying to write. At least that is how it seems to work for me.

Keira: Please share a particular detail about one of characters, please.

Typically I write a sex into my stories. In From Murky Depths I didn’t really do that. In fact, the protagonist, David Miller, is on the outs with his wife. Had the flood not hit, it’s very likely they would have separated. That’s one of the reasons he goes to help the people of Clayton, to delay following his wife to St. Louis.

Keira: Are you currently running any contests? What are they?

Yes I am. Thank you for asking. From Murky Depths just came out. The first three people to post reviews on Amazon will receive a signed copy of 2011 Erotica Quarterly (Halloween edition) featuring my erotic horror story “Cambion.”

Also, everyone who posts a review is automatically entered to win a copy of my novel, Family Business, coming soon from Gallows Press.

    Don’t miss out!

Keira: What advice would you give to an unpublished writer?

Keep reading, keep writing, keep improving. Cast a somewhat wide net with your submissions until you find a market that works for you. Meanwhile, network with readers. One avid fan with good connections can make a world of difference.

    Let’s get personal…

Keira: What is your favorite food?

    A great cheeseburger.

Keira: What is your favorite Smell?

    Freshly washed hair.

Keira: If you could change one your physical feature? Would you? What would it be?

    Longer legs.

Keira: What is your favorite favorite animal?

Dogs. I’m a real dog lover. That’s one of the main reasons I wrote Family Business, a novel that aspires (and does a fairly well job, if I may say so myself) to put the atrocities of puppy mills in human terms. Coming soon from Gallows Press.

    Keira: Do you have pets?

Yes. A miniature schnauzer named Fritz. He turns 13 this month.

Keira: What do you consider a household staple?

    Tabasco sauce.

    Keira: What are you reading?

I just finished Red: My uncensored life in rock by Sammy Hagar. Amazing book. This dude shows that you’ve got to have business sense to build a career, not just talent.

    Magic Monday: Fat Chances

Magic Monday, the day of Romance presents...
    Fat Chances by J.S. Wilsoncroft

A little bit about Fat Chances

After twenty years of marriage to her high school sweetheart, Tess Malone thought she’d married the perfect guy. When Darren dies in a horrific car accident, Tess soon learns that her marriage wasn’t so perfect after all. On an unexpected trip to New York, she discovers that her ate husband had been living a double life. Bitter and heartbroken, Tess and her best friend hit the clubs in New York, where she literally falls in the arms of a young prince charming, Greg Thomas. Will Greg’s charming, seductive smiles and romantic French quotes be enough to open her heart to love again? Or will he, too, shatter what’s left of it?

A little something about J.S. Wilsoncroft
J.S. Wilsoncroft was born and raised in the small town of Curwensville, Pennsylvania. Her mother and father taught her to be strong and never give up on her dreams, even though as a teenager she wasn’t sure what those dreams were. It wasn’t until she was older that she decided she wanted some kind of job working with animals. So, at the age of 23, she got her dog grooming license and has been grooming puppies ever since. It wasn’t until five years ago that she started writing. She woke up one morning with this story on her mind and as the day grew on, so did the story. She finally decided to sit down at her computer and started typing. That’s when her first book, “Roller Coaster Love” was born. After that, writing stories came to her as easy as grooming dogs. Now, Wilsoncroft has her hands full being a wife, mother of two children, and three yappy dogs, full-time dog groomer, and as a part time writer.
