The History of Haloween

The History of Halloween

The ancient origin of Halloween began as the Celtic festival of Samhain (pronounced Sow-in).

2000 years ago, the Celts (pronounced Kelts) inhabited the areas now known as Ireland, the United Kingdom and northern France.
They celebrated their new year on November 1st, which ended the summer/harvest season and began the long cold winter season.
The Celts believed that on the night of Samhain the ghosts of the dead returned to earth to cause great mischief and destruction.
Celts also believed that their Druid priests were able to communicate with the dead on this particular night and with the help of the dead-predict the future.

The Druid priests were the educated class amongst the Celts and were deeply religious.
They wore many hats in their culture such as; lawmakers, judges, scientists, poets and scholars.

« Sexiest Halloween Costumes to Wear This YearChristmas: All That Effort for One Day »The celebration of Samhain began with every home owner extinguishing their hearth fires, which symbolized the winter season/or dark half of the year. Later during the same night they were all relit from a community fire. This rekindling was symbolic of the spring season when life would return.

The Celts knew nothing of Christianity and held their own beliefs about death and the world beyond. They believed that when a person died they went to a place called Tir nan Og and became young again and happy. Some Celts believed that the dead lived with the fairies in Scotland and Ireland.

Contrary to a lot of Christian beliefs, the Celts didn’t believe in demons, nor did they sacrifice humans to any evil gods. They did however believe in gods, monsters, elves, witches, giants and spirits.

The Celts were the first to bob for apples but it wasn’t a game to them. They believed that the first one amongst them to bite into an apple would be the first to marry in the upcoming new year.

Peeling an apple also held meaning and beliefs. The longer the peel-the longer ones life was destined to be.
The Scottish placed nuts or stones in their hearths before going to bed and believed that if they somehow moved during the night that it was an omen of death.

Some believe that the Druid priests sacrificed virgins during the Samhain festivals but there is no proof of this anywhere. The Celts did execute criminals and prisoners of war but it wasn’t done as a celebration and not during their festivities of Samhain. Rather, it was done as punishment, much like today.

There is also no known proof that the Celts dressed in costumes and begged one another for food during the festivities.

During the American Depression, it is said that poor children in some areas went door to door begging “anything for the poor?” but that this was practiced on Thanksgiving day not Halloween.

During the 1800’s in the U.S. both Irish and Scottish immigrants played pranks on Halloween night and then laid the blame on the elves, fairies, goblins and witches.

The phrase “trick or treat” is an American one and became popular in the late 1930’s when the door to door begging was introduced nationwide in an attempt to stop the “tricking” practice of the holiday which had become quite violent. What had started as simply knocking over outhouses, soaping windows and removing gates from fences, soon became more destructive and dangerous to property as well as animals and humans.

Now let’s fast forward to modern day, what do you think? Is Halloween is all about costumes and candy or do you believe that the dead really walk the earth? Should we paint our faces in fear?

HAPPY HALLOWEEN!

Now, she must choose between the career she’s always wanted and the love she’s always dreamed.

About the Author:
April Bostic is a New Jersey-based, Adult Romance author who enjoys unleashing her creativity and letting her imagination run wild. Her love of romance books inspired her to become not just a reader, but also a writer. In December 2008, she self-published her first novel, a contemporary romance with a supernatural twist entitled "A Rose to the Fallen".

Her first short story, "Right Here, Right Now", released in January 2012, is an erotic romance with a dash of S&M. The following year, she released two more short stories: a romantic urban fantasy inspired by the Greek myth of Eros and Psyche entitled "Eros, My Love", and a sexy romantic comedy entitled "Love Addiction".

After five years, she released her second novel, "The Howling Heart" in August 2013, a paranormal romance that delves into the mystical world of werewolves and Norse gods. To end her busiest year in publishing, April will release her fourth and final short story in December, a historical vampire romance entitled "A Dark Scandal".

Excerpt from The Howling Heart by April Bostic:

“Have you ever made love to a human?” I asked timidly. My ears felt hot, and I looked at him through shy eyes. I hoped I wasn't overstepping the boundary of personal information.

He answered quietly. “No.”

His revelation came as a surprise, but I was still curious. “What about a wolf?” I don’t know why I asked. I knew there was no possible way this extremely attractive man was a virgin.

He hesitated this time. Seconds ticked by before he replied, “Pack law states we can only make love after we claim a mate and the leader recognizes our union.”

His indirect answer caught me off-guard, and I couldn't keep the sarcasm from my words. “You’re not one to follow the rules, so I’ll take that as a yes.”

I looked away and lifted my feet out of the water. With my legs bent, I pressed my knees against my chest and wrapped my arms around them. I thought the conversation was over, but Riley was determined to have my attention. His fingers grasped my chin to turn my head toward him.

“That’s probably the only law I haven’t broken.”

Our gazes locked, and he almost stole my breath, again. “Why? I know abstinence can’t be easy for you.”

His voice was almost a whisper. “Not anymore.”

I noticed his green irises had flecks of amber in them—the same color as his wolf eyes. That’s when I realized our heads had moved closer.

Riley’s warm breath caressed my face, and it smelled of hickory and clove. “I’m not interested in any she-wolves in the pack.”

Interview between Keira Kroft and April Bostic

Welcome to Keira’s Corner, where there is always chocolate, and lots and lots of coffee.

Keira: You have a story out through Eternal Press entitled The Howling Heart. What is that about?

The Howling Heart is an adult paranormal romance about a young woman from New York City named Paige who falls in love with a young werewolf from England named Riley. They first met as children in the forest, and are reunited years later as adults after a tragedy in Paige’s life. They both face many obstacles that prevent them from being together and it’s not only because they’re different species. Paige wants to focus on her career, but she wants to be with Riley, too. Pack law prohibits him from abandoning it, so they have to figure out how to make their relationship work.

Keira: What made you choose that title?

The beginning of book describes Riley howling for Paige, because he loves her and he’s upset that she left him. Since Riley’s a wolf and the story focuses on love, I thought The Howling Heart would be fitting. Plus, it’s short and catchy!

Keira: Where did the idea for your story come from?

I was inspired to write The Howling Heart after watching the movie Blood and Chocolate and the television series Wolf Lake.

Keira: What is your preferred genre to write in?

Adult Romance

Keira: Please tell us about any future projects that you are planning.

My fourth short story, A Dark Scandal, will be released in e-book in December 2013. I might write a sequel to The Howling Heart depending on certain factors, mostly motivation, which is extremely difficult for me.

Keira: How many books have you written?

I’ve written two novels, three short stories with one on the way!

Keira: Do you have a special writing method?
When I write novels, I write an outline first. It consists of all the information about each character, their descriptions and relationships to one another. Then I write summaries of what I want to happen in each chapter. If there is specific dialogue that I want to remember, I will jot it down. As I write the story, I follow the outline and fill in the details and dialogue.

Keira: What advice would you give to an unpublished writer?

If you write a story, and you’re passionate about it, don’t give up on it. See it through to the end, because you’ll feel so good about yourself when you do. It’s a major accomplishment to finish a story, whether it’s a short story, novella, or novel. Don’t get discouraged by negative readers or reviews. Remember for every person who doesn’t like your work, there will be someone who does. Writing, like all forms of art, is subjective, and not everyone is going to like your work. Be brave and put yourself out there. It takes a lot of courage to be a writer or author. Don’t be afraid, because you’ll realize it’s not so scary once you do it.

Let’s get personal…

Keira: Do you judge a book by its cover?
I’m ashamed to say, but yes, I do. I think it’s because I’m a visual person.

Keira: What is your Ideal vacation spot?
A tropical island like Hawaii or The Bahamas

Keira: Scary Movies or Happy Endings?
Happy Endings

Keira: What is your favorite food?
Pizza Hut pan pizza with extra cheese & sausage.

Keira: What is your guilty Pleasure?
Playing The Sims game on my computer.

Keira: What is your favorite Smell?
I love sweet smells, like candy, cookies, or cake.

Keira: What is your favorite color?
Pink. It’s been my favorite color since I was a child.

Keira: What is your favorite day of the week?
Saturday, because I don’t have to work and I can look forward to another day afterward that I still don’t have to work.

Keira: What is your favorite animal?
The Arctic Wolf

Thank you so much for joining us today.

Jessie Dalworth and Jinxsy Patterson are juniors and lifelong best friends. At home, Jessie deals with the pain of an absentee mother who has abandoned the family for the lure of Hollywood; Jinxsy contends with a 17th “birthday present” she never wanted or expected.

Meanwhile, at school, the unexplained activity begins to escalate when Jinxsy keeps seeing a long-haired guy in the hallway checking her out. Jessie can’t see him, but her younger brother, River, can.
Then, in English class, a stapler mysteriously flies off teacher Eve Carrow’s desk, hitting a student in the face who has just mouthed off to her. The beloved teacher is in the unenviable position of having her brute of a father as principal, so she hates sending any student to his office. As Principal Ernest Carrow begins to terrorize Eve and others more openly, something or someone unseen decides that it’s payback time.

School is getting stranger, and Jinxsy and Jessie are faced with mind-boggling changes in their home lives that complicate everything. When a string of shocking events expose explosive secrets, decades-long mysteries are finally revealed.

Now time for the reveal.
Drumroll...

Okay not yet...
No, not yet....
Okay here it is...

Excerpt from Mystical High by Lisette Brodey:

Eve Carrow, Mystekal High’s English teacher, glanced at the giant wall clock as Jessie and Jinxsy slipped into their seats seconds before the bell.
“Welcome, you two. I wasn’t sure you were going to join us today. I like to be fashionably late at parties sometimes, but school is a different story.”
The old bell sounded loudly.
Jessie opened her notebook, grabbed To Kill A Mockingbird, the current class book, from her backpack, and sat upright in her chair. “See? We’re on time. Ready to go.”
“Yes, you are.”
Jinxsy, still fumbling through her backpack, looked at her friend, then at her teacher. “Jess had a mishap with her locker. Cut her finger.”
From the back of the room, Taylor cackled. “Yeah, it took her ten minutes for Her Vampiress to suck a few drops of blood and ten more minutes for the Jinx to calm her down.”
Jessie turned abruptly in her chair. “You are so exaggerating, Taylor. Keep out of my business.”
“Your boring business.” Taylor ran her fingers through her blond and purple hair. “No wonder you don’t have a boyfriend when the biggest part of your day is a little boo boo on your finger. Waaaaaaaah!”
Eve, though usually of the sweetest demeanor, slammed a book down on her desk. “Taylor Dennison. Stop. Now. Everyone else, face front.” As she looked around the room, her angry look softened. “Okay, who wants to begin our discussion about Boo Radley?”
Sophia Chavez raised her hand. “I will.”
“Thank you, Sophia. Please go on.”
“Well, I know the kids made up a lot of stories about him, but it’s only natural, you know? I mean, he never came out of the house. There were creepy rumors, like how he stabbed his dad in the leg with scissors. If I heard that about someone, I would be thinking the same way that Scout, Jem, and Dill did.”
Eve nodded her head in agreement. “It’s very easy to assume all kinds of things when we don’t know the truth.”
“So why is that, Ms. Carrow?”
“Well, Sophia, I think it’s because as human beings, we like answers. If an answer can be looked up or found out, most of us will choose that route. But when the answer to a question isn’t readily available, we tend to make things up, to satisfy our inquiring brains. It’s not a good thing to do, but human beings engage in this practice quite liberally. What do you think of my assessment?”
Jessie, with little animation on her face, responded to her teacher’s question. “I think you’re right.”
Taylor yelled from the back of the room. “Why? Because people talk crap about your hermit crab aunt?”
Jessie turned and glared at Taylor. She bit her lip so hard it almost bled. She knew that if she responded, the words would be ugly ones she wouldn’t want to be heard saying.
Eve was furious. “Taylor, that was positively uncalled for. And just plain cruel. I’m being extraordinarily generous by not sending you to the principal’s office. But one more outburst and I won’t hesitate.”
Silence fell over the room. The principal of Mystekal High was Eve’s father, Ernest Carrow. He had been the principal since Eve herself was a student. The only person who seemed to tolerate him at all was his secretary, and he seemed to like children as much as picnic goers like ants.
Carrow was the wealthiest man in Mystekal and owned a large percentage of the real estate, both commercial and residential. He didn’t need the salary he earned as Mystekal High’s principal, but he liked to control people, and being in charge of everyone at the school helped him to do just that.
Even though she couldn’t stand sending students to her father’s office, Eve hated making empty threats even more. She despised him, and sending a student for discipline meant that she had to deal with her father as well. She would have to endure a lecture about how she wasn’t able to control her class or how she had failed to mete out proper discipline. Eve pretended not to hear Taylor’s last remark and prayed she would not step over the line again. At least for the remainder of class.
“Would you all please take out your class assignment for this week? We’re going to share.”
Cade Swift raised his hand.
“Yes, Cade?”
“Do you mean the paper you asked us to write on who we thought Boo Radley really was? The one where you wanted us to write a description of how we saw his life inside that house?”
“The one and only.”
Cade bit his lip. “Uh, would you mind calling on me last?”
“Since when are you shy?”
“I’m not. But after what you said to Sophia I’m thinking maybe I need to rewrite my paper.”
Taylor’s boyfriend, Santino Vega, laughed. “Dude, don’t you mean write it. Period.”
Cade, the dark-haired boy known for his smiling eyes was quick to respond. “No, Vega, I mean rewrite it.”
Eve Carrow was intrigued. “Why do you want to rewrite it, Cade?”
Cade looked embarrassed and responded more softly than usual. “Um, I think maybe I was too judgmental. Just want to do it over.”
Jessie looked admiringly at Cade, then at her best friend. Jinxsy knew Jessie had a crush on him but had been denying it. Jessie’s glance confirmed that she was ready to admit it. But whether or not she was ready to seek out Cade’s affections was an entirely different story.
Eve Carrow smiled. “Actually, Cade. I’d like you to read your paper as you wrote it and then tell us how you’d like to change it.”
“Oh, man. Do I have to?”
The class giggled and Jessie’s eyes grew wide with anticipation.
“As your teacher, I would truly appreciate it.”
“Read it, dude. Then tell everyone how you’ve gone soft on Radley.”
Eve looked sternly at the class loudmouth. “Mr. Vega, I can only surmise by your comments that you would prefer to lead the class into this exercise. By all means, why don’t you go first?”
Santino looked angry. “Listen, Ms. Carrow. I think it was really a stupid assignment. I mean, Harper Lee already wrote the character. There’s no point in us rewriting the dude. Sorry, didn’t do it and I’m not gonna do it. Any questions?”
As Santino’s words fell on the shocked class and the disrespected teacher, a gust of desert wind rushed through the open window, blew a small stapler off Eve Carrow’s desk, and sent it flying through the air before it landed sharply on Santino’s mouth.
“What the —?” Santino wiped the blood from his mouth.
As the class focused on the freak accident, Eve looked out the window and noticed that it was a very still day. The sagebrush was not moving. There was not even the faintest trace of wind.

Dead Dreams Plumb Music Trailer: http://youtu.be/uM7MI_3vqyo

Prologue from Dead Dreams by Emma Right:
They say each dead body, a human corpse, has a scent all of its own, a sweet-sour smell. A cadaver dog picks up the scent as clearly as a mother would recognize the photo of her child. Of course, I wouldn’t know, for I am no dog. I might as well have been, the way I’d stooped to yield to my basic instincts. My mind wandered to her, what her unique smell would be when, and if, they ever were to find her.

After what happened, I decided to write out the events that led to that day and details that might help, in case I’d missed something, or might need it for defense, or in case they found me dead. My relatives might need to piece together the things that had spiraled out of control, if they wanted closure to put me to rest, to forget me altogether. That would be least painful for them. I nodded to myself as I sat in the car. I thought of my most favorite girl in the world: Lilly. At least Lilly’d have my dog, Holly, to remember me by.
My friends used to call me Brie, short for Brianna. But, I could hardly count anyone a friend any more. I’d have to resort to back-watching if I wanted to survive.

Interview between Keira Kroft and Emma Right.

Welcome to Keira’s Corner, where there is always chocolate, and lots and lots of coffee.

Keira: You have a story out entitled Dead Dreams. What is that about?

Eighteen-year-old Brie O’Mara has so much going for her: a loving family on the sidelines,  an heiress for a roommate, and dreams that might just come true. Big dreams—of going to acting school, finishing college and making a name for herself.
What more could a girl want? Except her dreams are about to lead her down the road to nightmares. Nightmares that could turn into a deadly reality.
Dead Dreams, Book 1, a young adult psychological thriller and contemporary mystery.

Keira: What made you choose that title?

The story deals with the real dreams Brie O'Mara has and the dreams she hoped to achieve for herself. Hence the "Dreams" in the title. The "Dead" comes from the fact that …well, if I told you here, it'd be a dead giveaway, let's put it that way!

Keira: Where did the idea for your story come from?

We've all been there—at least those of us who are over 21—revving to grow up, the world at our feet, the stars reachable. Wonderful ,wondrous future. But in wanting to get there, we forget to smell the roses, we trample on thorns and we get sorely poked and pricked, and alas, some of the barbs could be poisonous. Except for the Grace that watches over me, over you, (whatever you believe in, call it LUCK if you wish), all it might have taken for any of us was that wrong turn, that grabbing of something that looked too good to pass up on, and coupled with a strong desire to make it in life, we might be blinded and grab the adder's tail. That is the story of Dead Dreams; of Brie O'Mara, a good girl, someone who'd never even gotten a traffic ticket, even a Miss Goodie Two-shoes. But, let's face it we can all be tempted, just a tiny bit. And sometimes that's all it takes to have things spin out of control.

Keira: What is your preferred genre to write in?

I like the Young Adult and Middle Grade Age range. Maybe it's because I've done so many read-alouds with my kids throughout our seventeen years of homeschooling. I remember I sometimes read to them till I was hoarse. As for genre, I enjoy anything from mysteries to fantasy to thrillers to historical sagas.

Keira: Please tell us about any future projects that you are planning.

I am  currently writing Keeper of Reign Book 2, a Middle grade/YA adventure fantasy, hopefully out early 2014. Some readers have asked me to write a prequel for Keeper of Reign. I might. Time is my enemy these days. Once I am done with this I will be working on Dead Dreams 2 and hope to finish this by middle of  2014.

Keira: Do you have a special writing method?

I am more of an organic writer since I always have a story in my head, an idea I'd like to grow, and once I start with the character and the conflict the story blossoms on its own. I just keep writing until the end. Then I wait a few weeks and work on other stuff--cover design, arrange for ads or blog tours, write guest posts--while I let the story settle, sort of like waiting for wine to age,  in its barrel-- you can't rush it. After this, I go back to the piece (about six-seven weeks later) to rearrange scenes and plots so that it has the traditional structure that is recognized as the basic architecture of what a good story should bethe 1/4-1/4/1/4/-1/4 structure.

Keira: How many hours a day do you dedicate to writing?
It varies from day to day, week to week. Sometimes I only manage a couple of hours a week! Some weeks I am be able to get ten hours in. I am also a homeschooling mom, and this takes up a lot of hours, and I always have my kids around which can make it hard to write with all the interruptions.

Keira: Do you use a particular writing method?

I try to follow a plot outline but it never works. I am more of an organic writer, so I just move along and then at the end I do the cleaning up, the pruning, the re-arranging.

Keira: What time of day, do you write best?
Anytime I can grab, anywhere.

Keira: Do you use one or more pen names?
It's Emma Right! Too many names and I might end up schizophrenic!

Keira: Are you currently running any contests? What are they?
I am having several blog tours going on from October till December 3rd. And yes, some will have giveaways, so please visit my site http://www.emmaright.com to get more details. I have the blog tours listed under one of my blogs.

Keira: What advice would you give to an unpublished writer?

Write a million words, then, read, read, read, and write a great story that's been trying to bust out of you. Read as many books as you can on crafting great fiction that deals with all the elements of a great book. Writer's Digest has plenty and I practically spent thousands of dollars trying to educate myself and soak in as much  as I could when I had to re-revise Keeper of Reignabout 17 times.
And never give up on your dream no matter how many problems life throws at you! If a person is called to write she will know this in her bones, even if it's something she has been pushing aside due to life's commitments. Don't give up. You'll eventually get published if you keep trying.

Let’s get personal…

Keira: Are you married?
Yes.

Keira: Do you have children?
Yes—five.

Keira: What’s your favorite thing to do?
Writing, and reading.

Keira: Are you a reader?
Most of the time.

Keira: Tell us something special about you.
I love horse-back riding but can't stand the smell of horses.

Keira: Can you tell us a secret?
If I told you it wouldn't be a secret, but most of my characters have plenty of secrets which you will find out eventually…at the end.

Keira: Do you judge a book by its cover?
Not usually. I judge a book by it's back blurb.

Keira: What is your motto?
Where there's life there's hope.

Keira: What do you think you will be doing five years from now?
Still writing, hopefully.

Keira: What is your Ideal vacation spot?
Switzerland.

About the Author:
Deborah Nam-Krane was born in New York, raised in Cambridge and went to school in Boston. You’re forgiven for assuming she’s prejudiced toward anything city or urban. She’s been writing in one way or another since she was eight years old (and telling stories well before that). She first met some of the characters in this story when she was thirteen years old, but it took two decades- and a couple of other characters- to get the story just right. In 2012 she wrote the History section of her sister Suzanne Nam’s Moon Thailand (Moon Handbooks). A blogger since 2006, she can be found in a number of places. Interview between Keira Kroft and Deborah Nam-Krane

Welcome to Keira’s Corner, where there is always chocolate, and lots and lots of coffee.

Keira: You have a story out entitled The Smartest Girl in the Room. What is that about?

Nineteen year old Emily is ambitious with a capital A. She wants her college diploma ASAP, and she's going to get it. But while Emily can handle getting kicked out of her mother's house, a broken heart and a lying boyfriend, when the person she cares about the most is hurt, suddenly she's more than a little ruthless. Emily's doing a very good job convincing everyone that she can get everything done on her own, but aren't smart people supposed to know when it's okay to ask for help?

Keira: What made you choose that title?

I have somehow convinced people that I'm very intelligent, which in a lot of ways is great but in other ways exhausting. It seems that smart people- and especially smart women- aren't allowed to like things like soap operas or romance. When we read and when we write, we're supposed to be deep.

The title is relevant to the book- Emily is very intelligent- but it's also a wink to all of the other smart women who like to read romance and chick lit.

Finally, it's a reference to a saying a small-businesswoman once said to me: "You never want to be the smartest person in any room." The corollary: if you're the smartest person in the room…go find another room.

Keira: How many books have you written?

As of this writing, I've written five books, and two of them I feel so good about I'm actually letting other people read them. The Smartest Girl in the Room was followed by The Family You Choose, and my editor has both The China Doll and Let's Move On… in her queue. I'm working on the fifth installment in The New Pioneers series, but in between that I also drafted…wait for it…a guide to homeschooling in a city on a very limited budget. (Which, I know, doesn't exactly scream Romance or Chick Lit, but that's how I roll.)

Keira: We have a special place for unpublished writers in our hearts, here at Keira’s Corner. So what advice would you give to an unpublished writer?

·        Your stories are all about your characters. Spend your time "getting to know them" and it will make your job much easier.
·        Keep reading, keep writing and keep editing.
·        Don't worry about your story being perfect; get it out onto paper and then perfect it.
·        Find an editor you can work with, and know that there are a lot of them out there, and at many different price points. We may scrimp on a lot of things (like marketing!), but an editor should be the thing we plan on spending money on.

Keira: What do you wear, to write?

I know there are people who think writing in your pyjamas is the best thing ever, but I need to do things like shower and change my clothes to get into the groove. Otherwise it feels like I haven't really begun my day. Having said that, I would prefer to wear something like yoga pants or soft jeans to anything structured.

Keira: Is writing your only talent?

I've been told I can carry a tune by most people, but if you ask my musician daughters, they might not agree.

Keira: What time of day, do you write best?

First thing in the morning and last thing at night are a little too stressful for me; between my children and my husband, something's bound to drag my attention away. I feel like I hit my groove best between 11 and 2 or 3. I'm fully awake and my creative brain has had a couple of hours to kick in.

Very specific, I know, which is why I usually take whatever time I can get.

Keira: Please share a particular detail about one of characters, please.

Richard Hendrickson is the quiet, dependable big brother everyone's always dreamed of having, particularly Emily. She can tell almost immediately that he's had to bear more than most men his age, and that's something she can relate to. But he's just waiting for the right person to help bring out his lighter side, and the person who does so isn't the one you think it's going to be when you first meet him.

Let’s get personal…

Keira: Are you married?

I have been married to the same man for over twenty years. We had a whirlwind courtship. We knew each other for two years, but either he was dating someone or I was. We finally started dating in March of 1993, and by April we were married.

Keira: Do you have children?

I have four children, two girls and twin boys (whom we were sure were going to be one girl).

Keira: What is your motto?

Good things come to those who wait, but better things come to those who don't.

Keira: What do you think you will be doing five years from now?

Writing my fifteenth book!

Keira: What is your ideal vacation spot?

Hawai'i! I went there when I was six years old, but the night before I was badly burned on my thigh. Obviously I lived and I'm not that scarred, but that meant that I couldn't go into the water. Still, I remember the beautiful beaches and scenery. So my goal is to go back- and this time actually go for a swim.

Keira: Scary Movies or Happy Endings?

Happy Endings, Sad Endings, Cliffhangers- anything but a Scary Movie! I'm still traumatized by having to sit through Pet Semetary when I was in high school. *shudder*

Keira: What is your favorite food?

I love creamy pasta with mushrooms and broccoli. Unfortunately, I'm a wheat-intolerant vegan. On top of that, one of my children was recently diagnosed with soy, sesame and tree nut allergies- all things which vegans sometimes use to make a cream sauce. So basically I'm down to the broccoli and mushrooms, maybe with some rice.

Keira: What is your guilty Pleasure?

Watching Days of Our Lives or The Bold and the Beautiful!

Keira: If you could change one your physical feature? Would you? What would it be?

I used to want to have wavier hair- my hair is very dark and very straight- but in my late twenties my sisters finally talked me out of it by telling me what a pain in the neck it could be to get their hair to "even out". Which just goes to my lazy nature- unless something is affecting my health, I'm happy to let it be!

Keira: What are you reading?

The Oracle of Delphi series by Diantha Jones. I'm not usually into speculative fiction, but I make the exception for Greek myth fan-fiction.

A little something plucked from...The Smartest Girl in the Room

Short Excerpt from The Smartest Girl in the Room by Deborah Nam-Krane:

"Is there some reason you want to keep me jacked up tonight?"
He leaned forward and put his face in his hands. "I like talking to you, and I want to do it as much as I can."
She held his eyes for a moment. "Alright, but you can’t expect anything I say in another hour to make any sense."
An hour and a half into their conversation, she indeed lost her train of thought and stared at him. He made a goofy face and she laughed. "You caught me."
"What were you thinking?"
"That I didn't enjoy myself this much the last time I stayed out this late."
"The last time? How late did you stay up?"
"At least until two."
"Then we're staying until three, for sure."
"Only if you get me another cannoli."
"Consider it done." He took a deep breath. "And who were you with?"
"Another girl." She paused. "Another heterosexual girl."
"Hmm. And how old were you?"
"Fifteen."
"Really?"
"What?"
"I can’t picture you up past your bedtime at that age."
"At that age, I could have done anything I wanted to as long as I didn’t get picked up by the police."
"Ah, you were one of those lucky kids with permissive parents."
"Just one. My parents were divorced by then, and the psychotically strict one left me with the pathologically lax one."
"Sounds like a good deal."
"I thought so too, for the most part. Of course, I did question it when there wasn't any food in the house."
Mitch laughed, but Emily's expression didn't change. "I'm sorry," he said, sitting up. "Food was always readily available in my house."
"Well, I never starved."
"That must have been rough."
Emily shrugged. "Even when there was food, I tried to avoid being around my Mom that year. That was when she married my stepfather, and it didn't matter if I was there or not. I was a non-person."
"No, you weren't." He took her hand. "And you're not now."
She squeezed back, and he held on tighter. "I wish I could trust you, but you're sort of exhausted and tired and who knows what you're going to say?"
"Then you're going to have to let me say these things when I'm awake."
"Yeah? Sorry, but I'm not going to believe you about anything until you get me that second cannoli."
"Waiter!"
They talked until the cafĂ© closed at three. The charm of an early fall evening was over. It was just cold now. Emily leaned against a building next to the restaurant, rubbing her hands together. "Okay, buddy. It’s three o’clock, there are no trains for a few hours and we’re out in the cold. What do you have in mind now?"
Mitch leaned over her and put his hands on her shoulders, then gently rested his chin on her forehead. She put her hands on his chest, just to keep warm, of course. "Better?" he asked.
"Oh, much." She tilted her head up to look at his smooth neck then hugged him. "But I don’t think anyone is going to let us stay here all night."
"Are you always like this?"
"Talkative? Yes, it keeps me amused."
"You seem like you’re worried someone’s going to send you to the principal’s office."
"And I suppose that’s served me well, because even during my darkest hours that never happened."
"Hmm. And I'm sure that made you a lot of friends."
"Some friends aren't worth having."
"So were you friend-free or just friend-less?"
"Friend-less."
"Mmm hmm," he started playing with her hair. "And were all of them girls?"
"Once I grew out of my gnome-state, I did manage to acquire a few friends of the Y-chromosome persuasion."
"Just a few?"
"And most of them were just friends."
"How many weren't?"
She looked up and he backed away. "Why do you ask?"
"Typical insecure guy stuff. I like to know who I'm being measured against."
"I think you're projecting. How am I doing in comparison to everyone else?"
"You are in a class all by yourself." He cleared his throat. "What about me?"
She took his hand. "Suffice to say, my taste in high school was so bad that, for the most part, Joe Welles would have been a better boyfriend."
"The most part," he repeated. "So who's my competition?"
She looked down for a moment. "He sort of doesn't count. Really, he was just a friend, and in some ways he wasn't even that."
"Oh, that's so much worse."
She shook her head. "It's not."
"Then why does he even get considered?"
"Because he was there for this one moment when everything seemed like it was as it should be and I wasn't alone." She smiled at the memory. "The starry night."
"There were a lot of stars?"
She giggled. "No, but I saw them anyway."
He came closer. "So how am I stacking up so far?"
"I haven't questioned my place in the world once tonight."
"So I'm the male version of Zainab. I guess that's a start."
"Zainab's great," she whispered, "but she doesn't make me see stars."
He moved in closer still. "Em-"
She put her fingers over his lips then smiled impishly. "No. This is sort of perfect right now."
"Anyone ever tell you you're a tease?"
"Anyone ever tell you you're impatient?"
He put his hands around her hips. "So how long do I have to wait?"
She suddenly remembered Drew. "Someone from my favorite class is having a party on Friday. Or he knows someone having a party-"
"Oh, it’s a he. Your favorite person from your favorite class?"
Emily started giggling. "No, I don’t think so. He’s kind of a dork."
"I write some legislation with Joe and suddenly you think I’m all about dorks?"
"Ah, but if you come to the party, you’ll also get to be with me. And, sorry, I cannot promise the same if you choose Joe."
"Then I would love to come to your friend’s party next Friday."
"It’s a date then."
"It’s another date."
